Say aloha to Hawaii! The 50th state is about to become your dream getaway (if it isn’t already), and we’re giving you some insight on how to see it right for the first time. When preparing for a trip to one of the most idyllic settings, there’s a lot to take into consideration especially if you really want to get the most out of it. Those who don’t know what to expect or how to prepare, we’ve got you covered with seven simple tips on traveling to Hawaii for the first time.

  • Plan A Long Trip

Because Hawaii is so far away, it’s not somewhere you can make spontaneous trips to whenever you want which is why you’re going to want to really spend some time there to see everything they have. The state is made up of eight main islands and it’s recommended to give each one at least a couple days to explore. If you do two islands in a week, be prepared to at least dedicate two weeks to this holiday so you can soak up all the adventures. Yes, it’s a prolonged period of time but considering the amount of time it takes to get there and to be adjusted to the time difference, you’ll need a few days just to get adjusted.

  • Don’t Overpack

We always want to look our best on our trips especially when it comes to Instagram-worthy locations since you never know what could turn into a photo shoot. That’s why many always feel the need to overpack except when you’re going to Hawaii you really won’t need three pairs of heels, four evening looks and five pairs of denim shorts. Pack with simplicity in mind by thinking of what goes best together and what you can interchange so that you don’t get stuck with a suitcase full of things that don’t make sense. Be deliberate with your choices and think about what swimwear is best for you before you pack it all up. If there are special occasions to celebrate and you know you’ll need a specific look, pack it, but prep in advance instead of packing four alternatives because you’re indecisive. This way you’ll also have some space for those souvenirs you’ll be bringing home.

  • Be Ready For Adventure

The tropical islands are perfect for running wild and exploring all that nature has to offer. From surfing to hiking and lots of sandy walks in between, there’s always something to do. On Maui is the Haleakala summit and crater that you can make a day out of exploring. On the Island of Hawaii is the Volcano National Park that’s worth a visit since the state is home to five volcanoes, three of which are still active. You can also rent bikes, scooters, and cars to get around as you choose to really see the islands for yourself if doing group activities isn’t for you. Even if you’re traveling solo, adventures await because one thing’s for sure in Hawaii, there is never a dull moment!

  • Be Respectful

Did you know that it’s a sign of disrespect to reject a lei? A person also cannot place a lei over their own head, it has to be given to them. It needs to be worn on the shoulders rather than around the neck and when it’s placed on by the greeter, it’s followed by a kiss on each cheek. Some of the land is also sacred so misbehaving in particular areas is also considered a sign of great disrespect. There are many rules to be observant of when it comes to the culture in Hawaii so doing your due diligence ahead of time is key.

  • Travel During The Dry Months

Hawaii has wet and dry months that can play a big factor in your vacation. June through September are the best to visit and though they’re also the busiest months in terms of tourism, there’s really no time that Hawaii isn’t full of adventurous visitors like yourself. Like most of the northern hemisphere, the state also experiences “winter” (though much milder than its US counterparts) during the colder months. Some parts will even get a little snow at the top of the mountains so opt for those during the summer if you want to stay dry and warm.

  • Do Your Research

Just like planning a trip anywhere, you need to be informed as to what you’ll need to bring, see or do while you’re visiting. Brush up on your Hawaiian or plan your budget in advance, there’s lots to do before you can start packing. This way you’ll be ready and equipped with everything you need to know in order to really make this trip one for the ages.

  • Enjoy Yourself

Hawaii is a paradise that’s waiting to help you take your mind off of the world’s troubles. Here you can escape and enjoy the time alone or with family, it’s a destination that’s made for serenity. While you may want to go and see all the things, you need to remember to live in the moment and enjoy yourself as you make lifelong memories.
