Is your summer feeling as romantic as the songs say it should be? Or do you only see cracked skin, dry hair, and a sunburnt nose? Some of the things summer brings don’t have songs written about them, they have tears cried over them. But sit tight – this summer we’ve got tried-and-tested home remedies for you that’ll get you through summer 2017’s sunny days in one hydrated piece.

There is a Home Remedy for every sunny problem

Sunburns:

Your day at the beach, afternoon walk, or cocktail(s) by the pool turned your tones from sunkissed to sunburnt.

Remedy: Cool and creamy yogurt. Use a cloth to wipe low-fat yogurt on the burn – back, chest, face, thighs, shoulders, stomach – anywhere. The coolness of the yogurt will ease the pain and leave a layer of cultures and protein that your skin can absorb to speed up healing. Wash off with lukewarm water after 10 minutes. Reapply as often as possible for the two days after the burn.

Dry Hair:

Sun shining, waves crashing and broken hair blowing off in the breeze. You can put a stop to this without shaving your hair off.

Remedy: Curry ‘and coconut treatment. Best done before bed. Mix 6 curry leaves with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and microwave for 2 minutes. Remove from the microwave and once cooled to a lukewarm temperature, massage into the scalp then wrap a wet towel around the hair. Wash out with water after 15 minutes. Towel dry and comb your hair. Wash and condition your hair, as usual, the morning after treatment. This treatment can be done as frequently as you wish however once or twice a week is enough.

Heat Rash:

Dancing your summer away? Oh no, you’re just trying to relieve pain! Sweat and blocked pores equal heat rash – often around the hips, neck, upper thighs, and back – your frequently ‘covered’ areas. It’s time to feel relief.

Remedy: Tumeric and honey healing. Mix 1 tspn turmeric with ¼ cup honey and apply directly onto the rash. The turmeric will remove toxins from the skin while the honey reduces inflammation. Wash off after 15 minutes. Repeat daily.

Blisters:

Feel like your body is robbing Peter to give to Paul? Your body needs water, and your feet have decided to steal and store it – right where your shoes rub or between your toes.

Remedy: Tea tree oil treatment. Tea tree oil has antifungal properties that can clean and clear your feet effectively. Wash the area with the blister and dry it. Apply tea tree oil and leave it on the blistered area. It doesn’t need to be washed off as it will be absorbed by your skin. Do this 4 times a day until you’re relieved.

Itchy Insect Bites:

Apparently, summer’s made you delicious.

Remedy: Apple cider vinegar relief. Fill a cup with 125ml warm water and 125ml apple cider vinegar. Mix then apply the liquid to the bites using a cotton swab. The skin will absorb the liquid so there’s no need to wash it off The vinegar will kill off light infections on the skin.

Protecting Hair Color:

Has your vibrant red becomes rusty orange? Golden blonde become washy yellow? Between the sun and pool, your hair’s color’s fading as the chemical bonds are broken down. Home remedy to the rescue!

Remedy: Switch shampoo for baking soda every other day. On those ‘other days,’ mix a tablespoon of baking soda with a cup of water. Once dissolved comb the mixture through your hair.

Swollen Eyes:

Tired, hot, or frustrated, swollen eyes spare no one.

Remedy: Cucumber slices will save you. Slice a cool cucumber and put one cucumber-circle on each eye for 20 minutes. You’ve seen it in the movies for a reason cucumber slices on your eyes will reduce the swelling.

Athlete’s Foot:

Whether you’ve been exercising to get the perfect beach-body or are sweating in your shoes as a result of the grossly hot weather, your feet might be dry and peeling.

Remedy: Cultures to fight fungus. Using a swab, place cool, low-fat yogurt on the infected area. Alternatively, let your feet soak in cool tea for 15-20 minutes then dry thoroughly. As often as possible remove your shoes and socks to allow your feet to “breathe” and stay dry.

Mild Swimmer’s Ear:

The water is so refreshing at this time of year. We said THE WATER IS SO REFRESHING AT THIS TIME OF YEAR. Sorry – you have swimmer’s ear, not swimmer’s eye.

Remedy: Vinegar solution. Mix 5 ml white vinegar with 5 ml rubbing alcohol. Using a plastic syringe, drop 2-3 drops of this mix into the affected ear/s. Lay with the infected ear up until the mix goes into the ear canal, then sit up and shake your ear to remove excess liquid. Alternatively, you can squeeze the juice from a small onion warmed in the microwave then cooled into your ear.
