Finding the perfect work-life balance has never been a “one size fits all” ideal. Due to a little thing we like to call individuality, the answer will always vary because of our contrasting perspectives.

Most recently, I word vomited to one of my friends, “I didn’t even have a chance to go hiking this summer because truthfully, work came before the mountains this year.” After the realization, I was aghast at the words coming out of my mouth.

I love my job and that’s why I chose it before anything else, which is totally acceptable. But, for me, work isn’t the sole purpose of my life. That being said, managing a definitive work-life balance can be quite the struggle, especially if you genuinely don’t know how.

Here are some essential work-life balance tips to help you avoid burnout:

Make Time for Yourself Every Day

As always, love and be kind to yourself. You are the controller of your own life, so you have to do what makes you happy. Give yourself one hour in the evening, every evening, to simply do you.

Read a book, ride your bike, go for a walk, listen to music, start an art project, sit outside in silence, journal, go on a date with yourself, rearrange a room in your house – do anything. Just do it and do it for the sake of happiness.

Where Are You Going?

Your life will go in the direction in which you choose to focus your energy. Acknowledge who you are and what you want out of life. If you want to work your way through life, then by all means let that be where you focus your efforts. But if you want to work hard and play harder, that’s also a widely accepted work-life balance.

Time is of the Essence

Time is the hottest commodity around and as far as I’m concerned, it’s the most valuable, finite resource we have. Maybe it’s time to implement some more structure, even if it means planning out every hour of the day to accomplish your goals. What is stopping you?

Give Your Phone a Rest

Put your phone on airplane mode and enjoy cruising your way through the day without any disruptions. In our technology infested world, we have become utterly dependent on our smartphones and when you give your phone a few hours — or even a whole day — off, you’ll allow yourself to just “be” and enjoy the time you have. Even if the feeling is only momentarily, it is still far worth the attempt.

Take a Day Off Every Now and Then

I know for the freelancers in the world, it sure is easy to find yourself working every single day. While it’s important to progress and accomplish your goals at work, if you want to achieve the perfect work life balance, it is important to give yourself a much needed (and well deserved) day off.
