It’s mid-October, which means — if you haven’t got an umbrella out — you’re probably starting to layer up and dig out the knitwear. So it’s perfect timing to freshen up last year’s winter wardrobe with a few key pieces that will bring your look up-to-date. First, you’re in luck because that old turtleneck you keep in the back of your closet is back in fashion – one down! Second, we promise this trend edit is both divine and extremely wearable – you don’t have to be Lady Gaga or be strutting down the runway to pull these looks off. So here goes…
Start hunting through your grandma’s closet because velvet is back in business this fall. This rich and romantic fabric hasn’t had a resurgence for a while so it’s a refreshing piece to add to your closet. The fabric of the season, it was seen on the runways of Stella McCartney, Valentino, Ralph Lauren, Prada, Rochas, and Givenchy, to name just a few. Think rich red wine colors, dusky pink rose tones, and deep evergreen shades, and combine with anything from dresses and skirts to boots (sounds slightly impractical, but still gorgeous!), and this season’s must-have bomber jacket.
Frills and Ruffles
There’s no denying the ruffle is alive and well this season. Frilled hems, ruffled collars and shirts are super cute looks for the office and bar scene this season. The look has been prominently featured in all its glory on the catwalks of Saint Laurent, Peter Pilotto, Preen and JW Anderson, you can also take this trend and tie it in with the cold-shoulder 80s vibe channeled by Prada and Isabel Marant. An off-the-shoulder ruffle is always so dreamy.
You’ll have noticed it popping up all over the place, pretty florals on bomber jackets (we’re loving the McQueen and Chloe options), dresses, blouses, and even on jeans, ankle boots, and bags. This season’s Gucci bags were covered in flowers and cute insects, and embroidery has become the perfect partner for gowns and jackets. For the more daring fashionista, retro, floral-embroidered boots add a cool kick to any daytime outfit, and are also the perfect accessory to transition you from boardroom to bar. Floral embroidered jackets are too pretty for any girl to pass up, and if you’re looking for a cool new look for the weekends, then embroidered jeans are your ticket.
Sequins, Shimmer and Shine
Arriving right on time for the festive party season, sequins and metallic glittered all over the runways. Be inspired by the looks designed by Max Mara, Valentino, Tory Burch, Dolce and Gabbana, and Saint Laurent. Although it seems a bit ironic for party attire, shimmer, shine and sparkle are actually the way forward this season, even in the daytime. Metallic mini dresses and skirts are an easy way to incorporate the trend into your look – you can also add a T-shirt underneath a la Valentino. For evening wear, a sprinkling of sequins will ensure you dazzle.
We slipped them into our closets during the spring, but it seems that designers aren’t ready to let go of them yet. Pleats are sticking around for fall and they’re an essential in your wardrobe: if you invest in one piece for fall, let it be pleated! Floaty, feminine and perfect for the Christmas party, this season they’re clean, modern and chic in shimmering metallics and rich berry hues. Take a cue from Gucci, Celine, Fendi, Valentino and Roksanda with your styling, and opt for a pleated metallic midi skirt for the weekend, or a pleated dress for festive frolics.
